This approval made the sorority the first member of the divine nine to be created at an historically black college or university. Hedgemon and Marie Woolfolk gave a presentation to the administration to secure approval, which was granted immediately. The women returned to Howard in the Fall of 1907 to work on the creation of the sorority. To implement her idea, Hedgemon began recruiting interested classmates during the spring of 1907 and she and the ladies used the summer of 1907 to research and explore options for their new organization.
